Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

I have been playing Sunset for many many years, and the course conditions have been getting progressively worse over the last several years. Seems like very little maintenance is being done. Very disappointed. One of my favorite tracks in the state, but can't play it anymore until they do some major work to bring it back to its past conditions
Not worth the $$$
Maybe the county card gets you in at a nice price. But $93 to play this with a cart is bananas. Course is worth ~$55. Its a typical NJ County Course. Above average layout, avg conditions relative to other munis. Many other courses in the area to play for that price with much better conditions.
Meh
Its a nice course and the staff is great. It is priced as a higher end course and its not. Its not a muni, but also not high end. Layout is straight forward but the greens are a bit slick. I play it once/twice a year and every time i tell myself not to come back. I just dont see it as a good value for the price and layout. Other players love it though so its likely just me. Maybe i will play it next year but unlikely again this year
Awesome course, just don’t walk it
I always walk when I play. However this course has so much elevation changes. I was dying
Loved the course though, very challenging and great design
Needs work
Maintenance has declined tremendously over last 5 years , used to be gem now just another cow track
Good layout, condition very good considering it’s February.
Bonus golf in NJ!
Winter golf
Good layout but condition wasn’t great . It is almost impossible to make nice condition at winter time l understand. Still it’s very good place to play golf at winter specially 25 dollars for green fees
Winter Golf
I'm always thankful that courses stay open in the winter. Sunset is one of those courses. I've played many winter rounds here. This was a good day on the first day of the year and the temps got up to almost 60. The downside is all the prior rain that was frozen melted, and it was pretty soggy. Some areas of the greens were really squishy wet. Overall conditions otherwise were fine. Pace was good, in at just under 4 hours. It's a good course to play but can be tough - a bit tight and if your drives go too far left/right - you'll be playing a second ball or dropping.
