Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Winter Golf
I'm always thankful that courses stay open in the winter. Sunset is one of those courses. I've played many winter rounds here. This was a good day on the first day of the year and the temps got up to almost 60. The downside is all the prior rain that was frozen melted, and it was pretty soggy. Some areas of the greens were really squishy wet. Overall conditions otherwise were fine. Pace was good, in at just under 4 hours. It's a good course to play but can be tough - a bit tight and if your drives go too far left/right - you'll be playing a second ball or dropping.
Ok for December
There are a few temporary greens / tees. For $19 to walk it was a good price. Some greens have a lot of ball marks. But for late December it’s pretty good.
Pretty course
Really pretty course. Huge greens
Some tight holes. 16-18 very challenging.
I enjoyed this course & recommend it.
Great
I love Sunset Valley, always have.
Over the last couple of years the upkeep had not been great, but asides from one temporary tee box and a couple of patches of dead grass, the course was in great shape
Worst Shape I’ve Ever Seen It Here
Yes, there hasn’t been much rain. At the same time, I’ve never seen Sunset in such bad shape. The greens are in good shape, but the bunkers, tee boxes, and the fairways are all awful. So many patchy (bare spots) areas.
Not going to return for now.
Expensive for 2 tee boxes under repair
Course was in solid condition besides 2 tee boxes on par 3s where we had to hit off dirt as the boxes were under repair. This would be fine but charging me $90 for a county course and having repair work being done is a joke. Guess it’s a good deal for county residents but I wouldn’t play here again unless it was like $75 including cart
I was charged 29 dollars for my cart two pat threes where Under construction almost made the two holes unplayable pace of play was horrible there was no rangers and no cart people terrible
Great day
Course was in great shape after torrential rain the day before. Scenic views and lots of elevated tee boxes make it fun to drive the ball. Definitely recommend.
It’s a complete cardio
This is an all year course. Quite hilly. A good size valley. Hills make it quite an exercise.
Really nice course. Conditions great for Jan
First time here. Conditions great, challenging course. A few temporary greens and tee boxes. Looking forward to playing here in spring when everything should be normal.
Nice course for walking.
Enjoying fresh air and a great view in each course.
What an uneducated comment. I played here on June 13 and was impressed with the conditioning. All greens, tees, and fairways were playable. Quite honestly don't recall any "bare spots".
