Sunset Valley Golf Course
About
Sunset Valley Golf Course is consistently ranked as one of the best public courses in New Jersey. It is one of four golf courses in the Morris County Parks system and it's considered the toughest. Located in Pompton Plains, the course is nestled in a wooded valley. It has a dramatic topography that provides plenty of ups and downs throughout the golf course. Golfers can expect a variety of elevation changes as well as a few blind shots and forced carries. Strategically placed bunkers come into play along the fast, undulating greens and mature trees line the rolling fairways. Water hazards come into play on a few holes too. Sunset Valley Golf Course's final three holes present one of the area's toughest finishes. The trio begins with the uphill par-5 16th and then finishes with two long par 4s.

Amazing Muni
Imagine complaining about temporary tees while a golf course tries to improve itself from getting destroyed by 55,000 rounds a year. People are amazing. Great place! Improves EVERYDAY!
Continues to go downhill
Thought it would be nicer from the last time I played two months ago. Still $90 without a County card and pound for pound the worst value in north Jersey. Rough hasn’t been maintained at all, can’t hit off of dirt. On par with Meadows at this point. I wonder what they do with the $90 because it’s not going back into the course.
Over priced two par 3s under construction which I didn’t know about before I played. The pat 3s where almost un playable and I had to pay 29 dollars for a cart there was not cart girl stop serving drinks at 5
Solid go to course.
A little out of the way but I will always say yes to this course. It’s good for all handicaps (played with the lady and she enjoyed it). Recommend playing here. They didn’t have the bev cart or halfway house tent going which was weird but still good.
Highly recommended!!
Great course! Needs cart service and better food setup. Greens are brutal tough!!
Great Value
Rained the night before but conditions were nice during tee time. Course was wet with some drainage issues but can’t complain. $24 for 18 holes, can’t beat that.
Challenging greens
Course was soaked due to huge rain storm hours earlier but I found it very enjoyable to play. Slopes on the greens was very challenging and fun. Great price for a great outing. Will definitely be back.
$78 for a twilight round…
Since when does it cost $78 to play a twilight round at a county course???? Same price at wild Turkey for that time. Greens were good but absolutely terrible and unfair pin locations. Snack stand was not open for anything besides a small bag of chips or a Hershey bar. Cart was in brutal condition for $23 a person.
Horrific Condition: A fall from grace
It used to be a nice course, now it is in awful shape. There’s barely any grass on the course.
I have been playing Sunset for many many years, and the course conditions have been getting progressively worse over the last several years. Seems like very little maintenance is being done. Very disappointed. One of my favorite tracks in the state, but can't play it anymore until they do some major work to bring it back to its past conditions
Not worth the $$$
Maybe the county card gets you in at a nice price. But $93 to play this with a cart is bananas. Course is worth ~$55. Its a typical NJ County Course. Above average layout, avg conditions relative to other munis. Many other courses in the area to play for that price with much better conditions.
Meh
Its a nice course and the staff is great. It is priced as a higher end course and its not. Its not a muni, but also not high end. Layout is straight forward but the greens are a bit slick. I play it once/twice a year and every time i tell myself not to come back. I just dont see it as a good value for the price and layout. Other players love it though so its likely just me. Maybe i will play it next year but unlikely again this year
lol.. charging $92 with temp tees and no grass in the rough. Greens that roll like pavement. Imagine that huh..
