Ron Jaworski’s Riverwinds Golf & Tennis Club is situated along a scenic stretch of grassland between the banks of the Woodbury Creek and the deep harbor marina on the Delaware River. Its location gives it the feel of traditional seaside links courses found in Scotland and Ireland, which is further enforced by the sod-wall bunkers that lurk near the greens. The layout features plenty of water and incorporates the surrounding wetlands as well. One unique feature of the golf course is that the routing winds across a mile-long twisting burn, creating a visually interesting setting. Riverwinds begins with a gentle, mostly flat front nine but the mounding becomes more aggressive as you move onto the back. All of the holes face a different direction, which means you’ll most likely be using all the clubs in your bag to tackle the crosswinds and rugged terrain.

Great course, mismanaged tee times

Always in great shape. Unfortunately was double booked for multiple tee times causing a wait at every hole. Started round around 430 and couldn’t finish because of the pace. Would’ve been nice if it were communicated ahead of time. For what i paid i can’t be too upset but starter was pretty lackadaisical about it all when questioned.

5+ Hour Round

The course was in excellent condition but the group 2 in front of us was incredibly slow. We teed off at 7:03 and didn't finish the round until after 12pm. The ranger would come by and watch them by not say anything to speed up the pace of play - whats the point of a ranger if he's not going to keep people moving? Finally on 18 as the slow group was finishing their round the ranger came over to us and said that the pace should pickup...too little too late as we only had one hole left and the entire course was now backed up.

Riverwinds is a great course but the tee times and pace are so poorly managed if you don't tee off in one of the first groups you'll easily have a 5+ hour round of golf.

Great course for women

This course is female-friendly, well maintained, and a good value. Note that the $30 fee was for 9 holes.

Jaws found a gem

Course is in great condition and is a great value. It’s well staffed with friendly people and in a very nice area. Back nine has many holes along the river which is beautiful. Wish they would cut back some of the vegetation so you could see more of the views but the course is a great layout. Competitive and difficult where it needs to be but scorable. Makes you play every shot in your bag and has a beautiful signature island type par 3 towards the end of your round. Would recommend and will go back

Slow

Played this course at 11am and they were insanely backed up. 2-3 foursomes waiting on each tee box. Apparently there were two outings that did not reserve enough tee times and they still let them fit their extra groups in that backed up the entire course. Bought my tee time online, you would think they would just not release tee times after the outings for an hour, but no, it was Terriblee. Overall the course is always in great condition other than their long, ball eating rough. In the end we did not finish the round, quit after 9, but they did give us a 9 hole rain check. Also played Saturday and it was a 5 hour and 10 minute round due to a slow group in front of us. They have clocks that are supposed to keep people on pace, but no one came to tell these people to speed up or move out of the way. I like this course, but I would never play this course again on the weekend or after 9am.

Stay out of the rough

This course is beautiful. Great layout. However, the thought is super long. You could know exactly where your ball went and not find it in the rough. You will probably find 3 other balls looking for yours. They don’t let you drive in the rough either so if you stink with your driver like me your walking around for a while. This course is really nice, but be prepared to lose balls if you don’t hit the fairway. Would be nice if they had a driving range.

There’s always one

Got out on the course by our assigned tee time. Staff was great, friendly and did everything to help us out. It had rained the night before, pretty heavy storms blew through the area, but the course was ready to go. Cart path only, but drained very well considering all I heard was this course closes the back nine after rain. GolfNow had an 8:33 hotdeal with the 25% discount added onto it. Couldn’t aske for a better deal on a holiday weekend. Beer cart came around often and was very friendly. The one issue I found with the layout of the course is the Turn. Now they do have dogs/burgers/drinks at the shed there. I just found it odd not being near the clubhouse after nine. The holes were challenging, bunkers were hit or miss. Some were pristine and some were full of gravel and not manicured. But what are you going to do after a storm. All in all a really good day and I would go back again anytime. Now here the worst part of the day, we had no one in front or behind us up until the 7th hole. Taking our time, considering shots and strategy and attempting to set up good scores. Also staying within a few minutes of the pace. On the ninth, I’m going to call him Stanley because he looked like a Stanley. Just had to come up and say something about “picking up the pace”. And he was 2 groups behind us. We kept our cool, because he was an old man, but come on!!!! Where do you need to be on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Just a guy who wanted to be that guy, I guess. If I could erase that guy from the round, it would’ve been a perfect day on the course. Thanks Stanley.

17th Island Green only Memorable Hole

Overall the course was in good condition considering the rain early in the week but it was still very wet (especially on the back 9 and in fact they told us they would let us know at the turn if the back 9 was open). Of course, this information was not shared with us until we were on the first hole. Lucky for us, by the time we reached 10 the back was open. Also, it was cart path only which made a long course seem even longer.

Also, the course is very far from the main building with the pro shop so you can't walk the course. You need to drive across the road and up a long path to the first hole.

Most women will find River Winds very long. if you like a long course that is fairly open then this course may be for you. The 7th hole is 161 (Par 3) on the scorecard. My GPS watch gave me 150 yardage to the middle. That is still a wood for most women. There is really no need for any course to have a par three that requires a driver or wood for anyone.

I found it a bit boring and the only really fun and memorable hole was the 17th hole, Island Green. You play 17 from an elevated green down to the hole. The 17th is the photo on the main website for the course.

The staff is very friendly but when you ask for advice as a first time player, they just say "stay in the fairways." Now, that is good advice because the rough is very thick so it is penalizing. However, they could also tell first time players that a creek goes across holes 11 and 12 (and it is not obvious from the middle of the fairway). Also, on 14th hole there is a large waste/rough area that if you can't hit over it from 150 (layup) - it is nasty stuff.

They reason I bring up the lack of advice from the staff is that when I paid my green fee I did ask if they had a yardage book. They don't and they really should because there are no drawings on the scorecard. So if they don't want to create a yardage book, they should at least have images of the holes on the back of the scorecard (my experience is that most courses with a price point above $50, have images of the holes on their scorecards). And, it doesn't matter that they have images (on beautiful stone blocks) at the tees for men because as women we don't play from those tees.

The course is not near the clubhouse, so at the turn they only bathroom is a porta-potti. My friends said they felt that given the price ($64 for Monday morning play) they should have a nice half-way house with a bathroom given the course does not take you by the main club house/Proshop at the turn.

Pace of play was fair given the length of the course and cart path only but still 4 hours and 40 minutes on a Monday is slow. I think we would have finished a bit sooner but the four men in front of us where often searching for balls.

They do not have a restaurant at the course but you can drive down the street to the River Winds restaurant and get a meal. It's a large restaurant with outdoor seating, full bar area. It is right on the river so very nice views. The food was good. Make sure to give them your scorecard and you get 10% off the meal. This was not shared with us by the golf course staff until we asked where to get a meal.

It's a nice course but I would not play it again. One and done for me. I would recommend it to friends who like long links style courses, if they PLAY DURING THE WEEK and it is NOT cart path only.

Hi "NotYourAverageGolfer"
I do play a lot of golf and have played many par 3s that were long; but for my reviews, I like to keep in mind the average female golfer (who may not hit the ball a long way or is a high handicapper) so they know there is a Par 3 that will require a driver or wood for them.
And, maybe the course is more interesting from the tees you play.
Cheers!

Pace of play comment is right on the nose, which is why i typically only play in the morning if i can. However, you are dead wrong that the 17th is the only signature hole on the course. And if you think a 160 yard par 3 is long, you obviously don't play a lot of golf. Cheers.

Beautiful course must play

This wasn’t my first time playing and won’t be last. I was grouped with a twosome really nice guys, we finished in 4 hours 12 minutes. Greens were little bumpy due to recent aerification but not too bad. Staff was very friendly.

Jaws keeps improving this track

On a day when the fog tried to hammer golfers with a long delay(and a long round), the staff managed to get everyone off a few minutes late(which was ok) and with golfers on almost every hole kept the pace manageable. 4:10 later and I had completed a fun round with my son.

Average course

Riverwinds is a solid track and one of the closest ones near Philadelphia. Has a few solid holes and very flexible with 5 different tees. Almost always fully booked on weekends. Expect a 5+ hour round if you are not one of the first to tee off.

Course has open layout

The course was in great condition for the time of year, but very wet from rains. We played cart path only... which slowed down the pace overall. Greens were rolling true for the conditions. I will definitely be back after it warms up and they have it the way they want it. Great day golfing!
