cow pasture
i played this course many times in the early eighties when i lived nearby, and it always tended to have some conditioning issues. however, now there are no fairways to speak of, just clumps of crabgrass. i normally play rancocas, ramblewood, and recently white oaks a few times. they all have had problems with the excess of rain we have had this summer, but freeway's problems run far deeper, as precious little is being put into maintenance. it is a shame for a club with nice people and a justifiably proud history. there were quite a few people playing yesterday. where is the money going???
Don't bother.
What was bad? Everything! The tee box dirt. When in the fairway, your hitting from crabgrass if lucky, otherwise dirt. The greens? It would be better to putt in the street. Don't find a bunker. You will be hitting from rocks. My course rating of difficult had nothing to do with the layout. It had to do with conditions. The driving range. The mats are 100 years old.
I would not play this course again if Golf Now said it was free. The only good thing about the round was the starter. He was engaging and friendly. Another top notch course should hire him.
wide open fairways- greens in rough shape
Great beginner course. the greens were really in rough shape. and the fairways were unevenly mowed, but for the price it's a great course to get your swings in. Also, there were not a lot of people on the course so it made for great pace of play.
can't beat it at the price we paid
freeway has a great layout and different variety of holes to play. the fairways are pretty beat up but hey, who doesn't like winter rules? the staff was super friendly.
Great deal
My buddy and I showed up early. The guys in proshop were very friendly and allowed us to tee off right away. We were the first ones to play. The pace was quick as there was nobody in front of us.
This course was excellent for the 18 dollars I paid but requires maintenance.
The course played ok but was a steal for 18 dollars. The greens on the front 9 need some maintenence and the fairways as well but overall you can play through it. The staff was friendly and answered all my questions fair. I will probably play this course again for the value and the convenience of how close it is to my home.
Nice open course. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
Had a great round. I booked an early tee time and was able to play at an extremely fast pace. Nicely maintained and easy to moderate playable course. Will absolutely play here again.
Good course for the price
The price is good. Some of the greens were patchy and some of the tee-boxes have lots of crabgrass, but the course was otherwise fine. The cart paths also need some work.
TLC
price is good but course definitely needs some tlc
Decent course
Not a bad course to play for the money. Some of the greens and tee boxes could use some better up keep. The cart paths need to be repaved. The course layout is nice. The front nine is wide open, giving you a good chance to score even if you have a miss hit or two. The back nine is more challenging. Almost every hole is tree lined on both sides.90 degree angled dog legs, greenside and fairway bunkers and other obsticals make you think about what club to select and what type of shot to hit. Overall a good course to play. Would go back and play again.
Basic Golf at it's Best
OK, So the kid behind the counter was, ahhhh... "grumpy" shall we say. The mats on the range are in shambles, just terrible! This ain't Augusta, but I'm not Arnold Palmer either.
I've played her many times before, it's a great after work course. It's accessible, it's playable, it's reasonable! You don't even need the discount specials to play here, rack rates are more than affordable. This is also a great!! walking course. Nothing that even resembles a hill and no wandering about to get to the next tee box.
The conditions were excellent! Fairways, greens, and rough were all in very good shape. Bunkers are a little stony, but's that's typical in this area. The layout itself offers several interesting and challenging holes. There is nothing on the course that jumps out at you visually, no sweeping vistas or intimidating bunkering. At the end of a round you'll find you still have to play good golf shots to get home with a decent score.
Again, it's not Pine Valley, but it is a good day of golf!
Great...for $29on a weekend
Greens rolled well. Fairways need work, and lots of seed. Rough is up, often too much.
Ever heard of a lawn mower?
Quite possibly the slowest greens ever. Most of the tee boxes were not mowed, and the course, in general, was not in good shape at all. I have played this course several times in the past, and it has never been a great course, but at least it was in OK shape. I think that this course attracts people with less knowledge of golf etiquette than most golfers. Very annoying. If you want a relatively cheap round of golf but don't really care about the condition of the course, then go here. I guess you don't get what you don't pay for. One positive thing about the course is that it has a good number of water coolers.
LONG HOLES
CARTS ARE A LITTLE OLD AND NEED WORK COURSE IN GOOD CONDITION
Value Course
I played for $16 on a weekday at 4 or so with a golfnow special. I am new to new jersey courses so I really had no idea what to expect. This course is mostly wide open. The first hole was over 600 yards. The fairways were mostly rockhard and there were no golf paths more or less, which explains the conditions of the course, which was poor to fair. Somehow the greens were actually in good shape and very fast and tough. Better than most greens I have played this year. When I arrived at the course I was the only person more or less dressed for golf as the pro shop guy was in jean shorts. The first golf cart I had sounded like it was going to die...so I went back after two holes to swap it out...
If you can get past these experiences it was actually rather fun to play...low stress, easy, perfect practice course for beginners. I was the only one on the course. Very run of the mill kind of beat up course, which was perfect for just playing 2 quick hours by myself after work and hitting multiple balls each hole. I would go back with my friends for a practice round on a Friday night, but this is not a course that you would want to spend $40 or $50 on Saturday morning playing.
Great for the Price
Most of the greens were decent. A lot of crab grass in the fairways. Tee boxes were mostly dirt and ugly. After GolfNow discount, though, $20 w/cart is a great deal. Wouldn't pay anymore than that. All in all, a nice cheap course to get out and play.
Course needs maintenance
The greens were fair but the fairways don't exist. Might as well put puttable greens at the end of a football field. Need to overseed most areas and manicure the sand traps. That is the ones that have sand in them!
Mhummer please contact me at pontakr@aol.com so we can give you a replay. we have cut our fairwaiys on are now headed to greatness.
It's not a bad track, if only it had good grass to play on. The layout is ok, pace of play was moderate, but we caught an outing.
I believe that if they maintained the course and had real grass in the fairways to hit from, it would be an acceptable place to get in a good round. A conversation I had with another player, while waiting, was that the rounds there go about 5+ hours, at times.
