Golf at its best
Played with a friend of mine on a day they had a 7:30 shot gun and only 20 golfers showed (good for us). The course was in great shape and we played as a twosome and finished in 3 1/2 hrs taking our time and taking a few extra practice shots. Great course friendly staff only negative is no driving range
OK But Pace of Play Unacceptable
Semi Private or Muni Track.. It begs the question but $80.00 on a Sunday Afternoon should be better green conditions and someone please move the groups leaving 2 -3 holes open ahead.
Greens Bumpy and Very slow... really nice undulations give them some speed they would be fine.
5 Plus hours... Ranger could care less and 3 holes open with the two groups in front of us thinking it was their own private playground.
One and done for me.
Pretty, but not worth the $$
My ratings for the course would go up a bit if the price went down. The fairways and greens were in very good shape, but the red tee boxes need some work ... they're mostly sloped/domed which is very annoying as a female golfer who sees this a lot - courses not paying attention to the "ladies'" tees.
It was also fairly wet, and EXTREMELY buggy. By the 8th hole we said we would never come back because of the 1) price and 2) BUGS!
I am not a fan of Banks' greens design - which tend to be gimmicky with extreme ridges running through. I love challenging greens, but these were essentially all of very similar design.
i think they are doing work on some bunkers, BUT 95% of them on this day were terrible. The sand was not raked that day and was PACKED down i think from previous rain. this was disappointing and made it very difficult to play out of the bunkers with unfair conditions
It plays very long with a lot of elevated greens. I don't hit a long ball, so I'm used to being short of the green, so it didn't bother me very much - but my playing partner is an excellent golfer and he had a hard time off the regulation tees - saying it plays FAR too long for the "average" golfer. Even the starter mentioned that they "recently" added gold tees because of the aging membership and they requested fairer tee boxes.
The yardage markers were quirky too ... one of the blue 200 discs in the middle of the fairway was 8 yards further back than the sprinkler head that said 202 yards. The signs on the tee boxes are old, where the red yardage is actually from the white tees. Only the score card is updated.
The website for both East/West is lacking. There is barely any information on either course, no pictures.
I realize this seems really negative - but I mean it to be an "average" review. We had a good time ... we did enjoy the fairways and greens, it was a very pretty course, but it's not worth the price.
Staff was very friendly and helpful
The course was in great condition and challenging.
Bring the short game
Challenging greens and some crazy bunkers that I am actually glad I didn't know were there. Bring your short game. Nice challenge
knoll west country club
this is a terrific course in great shape. well worth a play. one of the best public courses in northern NJ. Only drawback is they only accept cash.
This course puts the emphasis on your short game.
Played on a chilly November day and had an enjoyable round. Course was perfectly maintained and the greens rolled true but fast. Holes are straightforward and for the most part wide fairways. True par fours in length that it's driver mid iron in on most and the greens keep easy pars to a minimum by well-placed bunkers and challenging slopes on the green surface. Looking forward to playing again.
Great value course. Wonderful staff.
Great value course. Wonderful staff. Course well maintained. Nice design. Greens med-slow but rolled true. Bunkers well maintained. Really no complaints. Probably a bit of an unknown gem in the area. Again, staff - Mark Thunberg et al - all great. Would recommend course.
The greens were firm and true and one of the best I have played this year. The fairways were generous and the sand traps were well maintained too.

great place to play golf
challenging golf course, was in great shape, greens were very challenging.staff was very friendly, pace of play was excellent. Weather was fantastic, getting a great price on golfNow made the deal much more affordable. And holding number 17 for my first hole in one made it a very special day.
Great Couse
Played here 4 times and it is really fun. Love the course and people are super friendly. No. Credit cars use on greens fees which is a negative.
Generally it has great features
2 or 3 holes need to be repaired and maintained but I would say it has great features
Absolutely beautiful, great greens
I couldn't of had a better time the course was well groomed and the greens were very challenging I just wish it was public
This course was very well maintained.
It has a good distance and very challenging and enjoyable.
I like the course.
CHARLES "STEAMSHOVEL" BANKS...NOTHING MORE TO BE SAID!
the course was in overall good condition, little wet in some areas. love the way banks builds golf courses....always challenging. pace of play was slow but that was because we had to players that have only been playing a couple of years
Great Course, Challening, Very Slow Pace or Play
Let me start out by saying that this course is extremely challenging for a country club course. It has numerous fairway bunkers in the middle of the fairway and most of the green side bunkers are at least 10 feet below the hole with some 30 feet beneath the hole. The greens are quick and well kept with huge terraces creating 10+ feet breaks. The course is maintained in great condition. My only complaint, and it was fairly egregious, was the slow pace of play. I was surprised since it is a private course, but our round lasted about 5 hours and 15 minutes. We were a foursome with handicaps ranging from 10 to 30 and we waited on nearly every shot after the 5 or 6th hole.
Classic Design
A Charles Banks classic designed course. A municipal facility that is hard for non residents to get on. The course was pleasure to play. Deep traps surround the greens which are mostly elevated. The fairways are wide but traps are strategically placed .
Love the layout.
Most enjoyable round this year. Great staff, Great golf course!!
true country club course feel
true country club course feel. greens well protected and well maintained. very good conditions considering it was march and it had snowed that week.
