Potential, but terrible
I played this course years ago and thought it was spectacular. Challenging, beautiful and interesting. Go to the website and see its potential. However, today, Shore Gate is nothing like the pictures on the website. The sand complexes that make the pictures look amazing are filled with crab grass, not edged, and lost their interest as much of their shape has been removed. The fairways and greens are in pretty good shape, but the rough is either dead or crab grass. I want to like this course because I see it’s potential, but in the shape it’s in, I just can’t recommend it.
Friendly Staff but horrible conditions
I played here about 7 years ago and remember it being really nice. This time around it was in absolute terrible shape. Greens look like they are ever repaired and the bunkers are in awful shape. The grass, if you can even call it that, around the edges of the bunkers are poorly manicured. For $114 this place should be pristine. Every other jersey shore course I play at are all in tip top shape. If it wasn't the shore, they would never get away with charging what they do. Spend your money at Twisted Dune or Ballamor instead.
Great Sunday Golf!
My group of 8 had an awesome time! Chris Smith and his staff helped me out and made sure our day was flawless. The pro shop and bag drop staff was extremely friendly, along with the Halfway house staff. Great job!
Great track in recovery
I played this morning and two things are obvious: this course is not in its best condition and this odd one of the best public courses in New Jersey.
A few of the fairways had been completely aerated and reseeded which not only looked bad, but made some approaches challenging as they were surrounded by plugs. Other than that, the rest of the course was in pretty good shape.
The course is filled with challenging holes and beautiful views and is a great course to play. While the course isn’t in its best condition, the maintenance crew is doing a great job overcoming the obstacles they faced this summer.
I’ll definitely play again when I’m back down here.
Disgust
The course was in horrible shape. Crabgrass everywhere. Brown patches all along the fairway. The Staff were very rude. I can't believe how rude they were, I used to come play here every time Im in the area but NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN.
Course is done!!!
Awful conditions!!! This course ( conditions) looks and feels like a $40 dollar course but you pay over $100! Fairways trashed and getting worse by the round will not recover this year! Maybe a change of ownership is near? No money is being spent on this course no sand in traps ! No rough only crab grass! Ball marks on every green! Nothing I can say positive the staff pompous and not helpful! SAVE your money!
$120 Layout with $40 conditions
The course has a great layout but the conditions are atrocious. It rained heavy 4 days prior to our round and the fairways were still mostly mud with divots all over. The rough is filled with mostly crab grass and there is only sand in 20% of the bunkers with tarp showing in a few of the bunkers. Save your money and play a local muni.
If you love a challenge...
...this is your course. The layout is incredibly difficult, and presents a mental challenge to be solved. Every shot presents options. The conditions however left much to be desired. Just tons of dead patches all over the course. Lots of soggy areas too. Greens were good, not great. Expected better conditions for the price.
Good Course, Lousy Staff.wont be back
Let me start off telling you this course is very nice, good layout & conditions. Staff act like this is a exclusive private club. You can’t expect people to have a 4 hour round when you have cartpath only on several holes & rope off The entire holes on the ones you can drive on. The ranger was extremely annoying. I like this course, but will never play it again.
Unfriendly!
Idk if they had a bad day but every employee I encountered at this place was very unfriendly! This might not be important to some people but I golf a lot and enjoy talking to the staff. Not this place! We’ve played here every year on a guys trip for many years and it’s always been the least friendly of all the courses we play but this time...well, I’m taking time to write this review so enough said.
must play
If you are looking for a place to play when in South Jersey put Shore Gate on your list. This is a quality golf course that will challenge from every set of tees. If the ninth hole doesn't get your attention then surely the 15th will. It is in excellent shape and the big undulating greens can run fast.
Best Course at the Ahore
Been playing this course for years and it’s simply the best track at the shore. Tough, so bring your “A” game (137 slope from whites) but great layout, excellent variety of par 3s and overall great experience.
Challenging and fun
The course is staffed well, very friendly and service oriented staff for a public facility. With five sets of tees this cource can offer you all the challenge you're up for. Green comexes were in excellent shape, many, but not all of the bunkers were in good condition and the fairways and tee boxes were in good shape considering the number of rou d played. Will be back.
“Swing and a miss and don’t care”
I have been playing Shoregate regularly every summer since it opened in 2002. The course was reasonably priced until about 4 years ago. I think that when Sand Barrens went private, they jacked up their green fees to $125-..thinking they are now the only game in town. The twilight fee is $75-
It almost seems that management does not care if people play their coarse or not. Sure they get a few regular golfers but the place is always empty. That means “ crickets in the pro shop and restaurant” - The pro shop and restaurant is a trailer?
I really do not know what the deal is but this course is way over priced and not worth it. You can play Avalon or AC courses for half of that.
A Jersey Gem
I've played Shore Gate numerous times and have loved the challenge of the layout, pristine conditions, friendliness of the staff and the total golf experience. The course presents numerous challenges from numerous bunkers (some "faux"), ponds, undulating greens and so forth. But is also a fair course.
It's all golf, with practice range, and while food options are limited that's actually good. Course must be played from the proper set of tees - generally one closer than you think
Challenges are numerous, and it's a great place to play in all seasons. Love the Shore Gate experience.
Played here...
...many years ago when it was ranked very high in the state. Not anymore. Conditions where lacking, especially the bunkers, which there are quite a few.
The course was wet so it was cart path only, which I understand, but is was still very difficult because of the moguls and and bunkers lining most fairways. And there are some long walks from green to next tee.
Architecturally, it is visually exciting.
Firing on All Cylinders
First time back in a few years and this course was in fantastic shape. Tee boxes and fairways were pristine and the greens were firing! Firm and fast conditions made for a challenging and enjoyable day. Highly recommend playing this course if you're in the area or looking to make a day trip with friends.
Oakmont Like Gem
If you can hit the ball stright you"ll be fine on this course. Very fun beach course with ling grass and crazy sand traps like a us open. Definitely will play again.
Would recommend to a friend. IF A GOOD PLAYER
Really love this course. Does not get the publicity or business it is capable of. They do not advertise on golfnow.com or teeoff.com which would get new people to try it and then keep them. I would really avoid playing this course on a rainy day. Do not forget your ball retriever. Make sure you hit some bunker shots before you arrive because they will haunt you. Great conditions and layout.
Shore Gate - A Top Shelf Course
I've played a lot of courses in the last 50+ years. Shore Gate is in my top 5 - ever! The layout is magnificent. Almost every hole is spectacular and unique. From the tee box, holes just fit my eyes. Though off-season now, there was a good amount of routine maintenance happening. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens are in excellent shape which is a rarity for many area courses in March. The course is even walkable which is also a rarity for courses designed and built the last 30 years. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed playing here even if one's game is a bit ragged that day. The beauty of the course will be a positive remembrance.
