Jersey Shore-favorite Blue Heron Pines Golf Club wanders through ancient pine forests, sparkling blue lakes
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- Blue Heron Pines Golf Club has been recognized as one of the best 18-hole courses on the Jersey Shore.
Since opening in 1993, this Stephen Kay design has become known for both its scenery and challenging design. The course wanders through ancient pine forests accented with sparkling blue lakes. The parkland layout has subtle contours and modest but tricky elevation changes on the greens.
There is an abundance of sand throughout the course to contend with, but it gets particularly tough on the back nine starting with the treacherous 14th hole. This hole requires a carry past a 100-yard waste bunker planted with native long grasses in order to make it to the slightly elevated green.
It is followed by an equally challenging hole with an elevated green, though the 15th is longer at 518 yards. There are also bunkers along the right of the fairway and a lake along the left side of the green.
The course has a fair amount of challenges, but five sets of tees makes it more accessible for players of all skill levels.

Born and raised in the former Soviet Union, photographer Oleg Volovik moved to the United States in 1992 and now lives with his wife and two children in Los Angeles. He joined the TravelGolf editorial team in 2010. Originally graduated with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering he continued to dedicate his time and energy to his passion for visual arts and photography. Oleg has extensive experience in fine arts, fashion, event, architecture and journalistic photography. His work has been exhibited in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Moscow, where he also taught a master class, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard, in April 2007. He may be a novice golfer, but Oleg always wears a white leather glove during photo sessions. "Golf photography is my own 'game' with the beauty of nature and human creativity.
