Conflicted Experience
The course was in good condition. The fairways were great and the tee boxes were clean. The greens were a bit patchy but very fast. When we got to the first tee, the starter immediately stopped us because we were sharing bags. We came from the city so not everyone had a bag, and no one stopped us before heading to the tee so we thought they didn’t mind. Instead of kindly explaining the rule, the starter rudely chastised us and borderline insulted us saying any serious golfer would have their own bag. We would have been very understanding of the rule if he had just been reasonable. He told us every single course in the country follows this. Having worked in the golf industry for 5 years, I can say this isn’t true. I support a fast pace of play, but we ended up still sharing the clubs despite paying for rental sets, and were waiting on the tee box by the 4th hole. Despite this, the course was great and fun.
CHALLENGING COURSE
Besides being overwhelmed by strong winds, the course was a bit intimidating, some holes were somewhat difficult. I actually enjoyed the challenge. But the wind took everything out of me, never played in those windy conditions, when you have no other choices than to aim 10 to 20 feet left or right of the whole. Any how I had a decent time. the most important issue I had was the fairways were very spongy, I think it's called Kikuyu and it's very spongy and thick, balls won't roll much on drives, also there were to many really deep swinging divots without restoration of any of them. It could be better. though I did like all the greens, very smooth and fast.
A hidden jam!
Nice 9 hole course with great layout and view.
Great 9 hole course!
Skyway is always a good time. The course layout is good. The greens are in good shape.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
IT WAS 55 DEGREES on December 31st in Jersey City. What more could you ask for?
How about a birdie on #8 :) "I did it Skyway!"
A Closing Event
On December 17th a warm Friday afternoon, rather than go for a Holiday lunch, I went for a quick 9 at one of my favorite courses. Skyway at Lincoln Park is an oasis far from the City yet only a few miles from The Holland Tunnel. It is a place of great contrasts only steps from the jammed six lane road with The Skyway able to maybe reached by a mighty Drive. It is 9 holes which are wonderfully placed creating a beautiful place to play. The first is short par 4 that goes down to the left with a large green with great undulation. A hole to make a par The second is an uphill par 3 with a large green That Friday from thee tee, it played nearly 200 yards into a stiff breeze , a real challenge Next is the par 5, third hole, a great risk reward hole. A hole that rolls down to left from the tee. The shallow green rises on a cliff daring and challenges players to attack across the hazard. For the less adventurous you can bale left on your second and attack the shallow rolling green while remaining mindful of the dangers short and right. The fourth is a short 3 that is well bunkered and a green bisected by ridges is only a wedge away Five is a long uphill par 4 that goes forever and especially when it plays into the wind. The fairway is surrounded by high dunes on each side compelling a shot in the fairway. Six is a par 5 and represent an opportunity to score. A long drive in the fairway favoring the left side can set up an opportunity to attack the green as it plays downhill to the green. Seven is the last par 4 and a strategy hole as this dogleg left features water on the left side of the fairway to the green. The green is at the top of the plateau with water short and left. Bombers can also choose to along the right edge of the fairway set up an easier pitch to the green. Eight is the toughest par 5 with a carry of 200 yards at least over water and marsh to the fairway. From there a second shot must negotiate a water grave that determines where you should play. The green has a hazard left and a par here is a great score. In fact many days bogey came be excellent especially when into the wind. The last is a medium length par 3 with another interesting green with ridges and valleys. Conditions are always good and it plays great when firm and fast. It is always a great experience
Beautiful course and super friendly staffs!
It was my first time coming here and the green conditions were great. Overall course was a bit challenging and 9 hole didn't feel like a short 9 hole. I've been to some 9 hole courses in CT and those had too many par 3s and it felt too short. Super friendly staff memebers and this course is now one of my favorites. I do want to go again before it starts snowing!
