Cape May National Golf Club
About
Cape May National Golf Club, also known as simply the National, is a favorite among both New Jersey natives and visitors. The club has roots that date back to the 1800s when it was known as Cape May Country Club. The peacefully secluded golf course is nestled amidst mature woodlands, surrounding one of the largest private bird sanctuaries in New Jersey. The scenery is beautiful but don't let that distract you. There are plenty of challenges to keep you on your toes, including tree-lined fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and several water hazards. There are a few blind shots that make Cape May National Golf Club especially tricky if playing it for the first time. The classic design is a fair test but it's player-friendly enough for a wide range of skill levels.

Challenging course keeping the natural contours of the landscape it was built upon
I liked the course. I will play it again. Layout and hazards are challenging -- greens in very good condition and roll true. Tee boxes need to be attended to....had many bare spots.
Great course, well maintained, superior greens and starters friendly and helpful.
Well laid out and fun to play. Good time with out of towners we met and played with.
Beautiful Setting
Course is laid out in what looks like a Nature Preserve.
Interesting holes, lots of challenges, small greens make it difficult. Deviation from the fairway can make it even more challenging. Overall I would come back and play it again.
Rained previous day so no carts on path
At each green and throughout hole had to wait. At hole 10,4 groups of 4 called office and no ranger response dried up, could have carts on path. Food was awful, worst hot dog ever and that was it. Had to wait for someone to serve in morning and around the bend very slow
Needs rangers
Well designed layout with differing shots on most holes. Unfortunately, pace of play was awful as there were no rangers to maintain pace. Four groups on no. 10 and 4 1/2 hour+ round is not acceptable. This course and its patrons deserve better!
Interesting series of holes
Course is kept in very good shape. Bunkers need work which is the only criticism for how the course is kept. Offers some challenging holes while still having holes that you can score on. Pace of play was fine. Greens are in excellent condition and roll true.
Great course - some memorable holes
Course was in wonderful condition. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Pace of play was excellent. Only negative was that markings to next hole and yardage markings on the course were hard to find. Bring a GPS.
Pleasant Day
We played on a sweltering hot day. The course was in great condition however and the pace of play was perfect. The starter maintained the tee times which allowed continual play all day. There was drinking water on the course but the beverage cart only came around once, which was disappointing. Other than that I plan on playing Cape May National again.
Not a $100 Course
What I liked: the fairways and greens were in very good shape. The layout of a lot of the holes was creative and made you think carefully about your shots. Pace of play (we played on a weekday) was very good and we finished in 4 hours 10 minutes.
What I didn't like: bunkers are in horrible shape with very little sand and lots of rocks. The cart paths are in very poor condition, so be ready for a bumpy ride! We paid $100 each and it just wasn't worth the money, but I assume that all the Jersey Shore courses are overpriced in the summer. I'd be happy paying $50-$60 to play here.
Overall a nice course, but be sure you get a deal to make it worth it.
Very Nice Day
Very nice day at the course. The course was in magnificent shape, the staff was very nice. It was all around a fun day of golf. Will be back
Beautiful course.
Always a great pleasure to play this course. Challenging and interesting holes.
Horrible service from Club House Staff
Arrived for our tee time about 20 minutes early. As a threesome we were ready to go as soon as we got there. The course had no tee times ahead of us, but the lady in the club house refused to let us go out early The rest of the staff was very accommodating and was willing to let us play but the lady in the club house refused. She said their were many groups ahead of us and that we had to wait. She also told us we had to wait for a fourth GOLFNOW member who hadn't arrived yet. . We sat around for the 20 minutes until 3 PM and finally we were allowed out. The 4th member of our group had been on the practice green waiting for us for twenty minutes. The lady was unprofessional and after today we do not plan on returning again.
Nice Test
Make sure you pick the correct tee box to play, or higher handicaper's will have their lunch handed to them if they play the tips. Course was in great shape, every hole was alittle different, with its own set of challanges.
Problems
This is a nice course in Cape May County however we played on a Saturday morning in season at 7:15 as a threesome riding and we were held up from 7th hole to the end by a fivesome walking. We were not able to play through so we just hit some extra balls. The ranger never sped them up or split them up. so if you play be prepared for the chance of slow play.
Worth the price
Very nice layout and fun course to play. Not in great shape but I enjoyed playing here. Like most public courses ,the greens are not true and are bouncy .I paid $40. to play here on golf now which is a steal. Any more than $60 for this course is too much. I have played here 3 times ,it is a challenging course. If kept in better shape(greens), it could be on of the better courses in south jersey.
Classic layout
This was our first time playing Cape May and it was incredible. They had just been hit with an overnight storm so it was wet and cart path only but the layout was fabulous. We can't wait to go back when it will be dry and fast.
Good Cource, Staff not so sure
Good Cource, This is a county owned cource and the staff especialy the starter are very controlling as to what you can do.
Goverment employees.
Must really manage the course, not easy for beginners. 14 handicap, I shot an 83 off the whites.
I had a wonderful day out at the National. You must really manage the course, and it's going to be a real challenge for beginners. The greens were in mostly very good condition, as were the fairways. The bunkers need sand...they played like wet dirt.
Nice course - couple gimmicky holes
The course was really nice. Lots of water. I wasn't in any of the bunkers, but they looked like they could use some work (little sand, lots of rocks). Overall, the course was very well maintained. It was quite wet because it had poured rain the day before, but it was still well drained. There were a few holes for which you couldn't see the full fairway and had to guess where to land your drive, but it was manageable. I would definitely have friends play here. And the rate was great.
Great layout, beautiful setting which has seen better days
We love the setting and course layout, but the conditions were disappointing. The tee Boxes were beat up, the Tee signs need re-painting, the greens were inconsistent and the sand traps are like mini quarries.
The clubhouse is run down and the pro shop is tacky.
With some attention to maintenance and grooming this "grand old layout" could be spectacular!
My wife remarked the she was glad we paid only $49.00 each.
